Day 1
Arrival in Costa Rica |
|
Upon arrival at the SJO Airport you’ll be met by a Tour Costa Rica representative and taken to Hotel Bougainvillea in nearby Heredia. The landmark hotel is famous for its 10-acres of award-winning gardens brimming with native trees, plants, and flower species attracting countless birds and butterflies.

Day 2
Transfer to Puerto Jiménez & Night Hike |
|
Rise early for the in-country flight and transfer your hotel in Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula. The peninsula is home to the fascinating Corcovado National Park, considered one of the most biologically intense places on earth by National Geographic.

Day 3
Puerto Jiménez – Birdwatching Tour and leisure |
|
Rise early to a cacophony of animal and bird life. Today you will explore the hotel’s 75-hectare private reserve where up to 400 different bird species may be sighted. Your walk will take you through four distinct ecosystems, home to species such as toucans, scarlet macaws, hawks, aracari, and countless others.

Day 4
Puerto Jiménez – Long Guided Nature Hike and leisure |

Today’s adventure will take you hiking through pristine rainforests with an expert guide who will point out the numerous animals, reptiles, insects, and birds hidden in the jungle foliage. Four species of monkeys, sloths, white-lipped peccaries, coatis, agoutis, tayras, kinkajous, and many other species call this forest home.

Day 5
Transfer to Turrialba – Leisure |
|
Take an early morning flight back to San José followed by a scenic 2.5-hour drive through fertile countryside to Turrialba, home of the Turrialba Volcano and the acclaimed Rancho Naturalista, one of the country’s premier birding lodges. Grab your binoculars and enjoy the birdlife from your spacious balcony.

Day 6
Turrialba – Leisure |
|
Wake to a hot traditional breakfast overlooking the expansive gardens. Today, you decide where the road less traveled will take you. Arrange a guided birding excursion to stroll the private reserve in search of hummingbird pools or new bird species or take a traditional cooking and dance class at the lodge.

Day 7
Transfer to San Gerardo de Dota – Leisure |
|
Leave the Turrialba countryside behind and climb into the majestic Talamanca Mountains to your mist-shrouded retreat in San Gerardo de Dota. Nestled in the Savegre River Valley, the area is home to the resplendent quetzal, trogons, tanagers, woodpeckers, and hundreds of other rare and exotic bird species.

Day 8
San Gerardo de Dota – Morning and evening birdwatching tours |
|
Rise with the dawn to explore the wakening valley, draped in mist and fascinating cloud forest fauna. The 4-hour tour will take you through the habitats of some 150-bird species, 30% of whom are endemic. At nightfall, set out again for a glimpse of a remarkable and vivacious nocturnal world.

Day 9
San Gerardo de Dota – Quetzal Tour and leisure |
|
At last, your search reaches its peak as you set out into the morning in search of the ever -elusive resplendent quetzal, sacred bird of the Aztec and Maya. San Gerardo de Dota is famous for its large population of the shy birds, with a 95% sighting rate for guided tours.

Day 10
Transfer to San José – Departure from the Juan Santamaria International Airport |
|
After a final traditional breakfast, a Tour Costa Rica driver will take you down through the steep emerald mountains to the Central Valley and SJO International Airport. The approximate driving time is three hours. Arrive refreshed and rejuvenated, ready for your flight home.
