ONE DAY TOURS FROM ARENAL

Celeste River Hike & Tenorio Volcano National Park

The Celeste River zone is one of the most beautiful areas in Costa Rica, offering a great hiking experience for the whole family.  The tour lasts approximately 10 hours and on clear days it's possible to view the Arenal, Tenorio and Miravalles Volcanoes (sometimes even Lake Nicaragua!).

We depart from the town of La Fortuna at 7am for a fascinating trip that combines adventure and discovery with the chance to observe wonderful flora and fauna. Along the way we will stop to rest at a picturesque village before continuing on towards the "Rio Celeste" in the Tenorio Volcano National Park.  Once at the park, we will set off on a 7km (approximately 4 miles) hike which passes by the River Celeste Lagoon, a great place for taking photographs.  Before you know it you will arrive at the Rio Celeste,  where mother nature magically mixes the water of two crystal-clear streams, changing the water's color to a beautiful bright, light-blue (hence the name "Rio Celeste" or Light-Blue River).

Next we continue on to a smoldering land of small craters that bubble and hiss, known as "las ollas" (the cooking pots). The clay in these crates is said to contain therapeutic properties.  Here we will cover our bodies with this clay and then wash it off in the Tenorio Volcano Thermal Waters!

Relaxed and refreshed we will continue our hike along a mountain path that leads to a jungle area of the volcano where gases are expelled at very high temperatures.  At the end of a steep but interesting walk down, we are rewarded by the splendor of the Rio Celeste Waterfall, which is impressive not for its size but for its unique colors.

After spending some time at the waterfall there is a tough hike back to the park entrance where a delicious and well-deserved lunch awaits.
