COSTA RICA MULTIDAY PACKAGES

Caribbean Jungle, Beach and River Expedition

Journey to Costa Rica’s luxuriant Caribbean Zone to explore jungle-lined waterways, raft through pristine rainforests, and stroll down idyllic, palm-fringed beaches while the waves wash over nearby coral reefs.

Day 1: You’ll be met at the airport by our representative and taken to your hotel.
Overnight at the Real InterContinental Hotel, or similar.

Day 2: Tortuguero National Park.
Early morning pick-up at your San José hotel for the drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park, past lush cloud forest and breathtaking views, and down to the lowlands of Limon (Costa Rica’s Caribbean province). At Matina, you’ll board a boat for the journey up jungle-lined canals to Tortuguero National Park, stopping along the way to look at crocodiles, monkeys and varied birdlife. After checking into the nature lodge, you can hike through the rainforest, where you might see collared manakins, tanagers and other wildlife, or take a short boat ride to the beach at night to look for nesting green turtles (July --October). Overnight at Pachira Lodge, or similar. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Tortuguero Canals
Get up early for a guided boat tour of the Tortuguero Canals. The boats use quiet electric motors, so you can get close enough to photograph some animals. The area’s rich wildlife includes kingfishers, cormorants, boat-billed herons, green iguanas, crocodiles, sloths and monkeys. After this fascinating excursion, you can relax by the pool, or take a boat across the lagoon to explore the funky village of Tortuguero. Overnight at Pachira Lodge, or similar. (B, L, D)

Day 4: Ground transportation to Pacuare Lodge
After breakfast, you’ll boat back down the canals to Matina, where you’ll board a microbus for the trip into the mountains to the Pacuare Lodge. You’ll arrive at the Pacuare Lodge around noon, after crossing over the Pacuare River in a gondola and hiking 300 meters. After a delicious lunch, you can relax in your bungalow or join a guided hike to a 30-foot waterfall in the rainforest. In the late afternoon, you may want to join fellow travelers in our main lodge for a cocktail, or other beverage before enjoying a delicious candlelight dinner. Overnight at Pacuare Lodge.  (B, L, D)

Day 5: Optional Tour at Pacuare Lodge
Wake up to a symphony of bird song and the soothing sound of the nearby river. Then head over to the main lodge for a delicious breakfast of homemade bread, tropical fruits, yogurt, eggs, pancakes, cereal and juice and coffee. The lodge is surrounded by rainforest, and our resident naturalist guide is happy to share his knowledge of the area’s abundant wildlife. Choose from exciting, optional tours (not included in the price) that include guided hikes through the surrounding forest, the Cabecar Indian tour, which consists of a challenging jungle trek to visit the home of a Cabecar Indian shaman, and our Adventure Canopy Tour, which takes you gliding through the rainforest along zip lines between treetop platforms. Overnight at Pacuare Lodge.  (B, L, D)

Day 6: Pacuare River Rafting
Between 9:00-10:00 am, you’ll begin a fun-filled day of white water rafting excitement (approximately 3½ hours over class III-IV rapids) on one of the world’s most beautiful rivers. You’ll paddle past pristine rainforest, waterfalls, and an array of birdlife that includes toucans, herons, kingfishers and cormorants. A delicious picnic lunch is served along the river en route. At our river take-out, you’ll have a chance to change into dry clothes at our private facilities before boarding our minibus to the Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Viejo.  With its laid-back attitude and Caribbean lifestyle, Puerto Viejo is the ideal location for fun in the sun. Overnight at the Shawanda Hotel, or similar. (B, L)

Day 7: Day to enjoy at your leisure to enjoy flora and fauna of the surrounding rainforest, or play on nearby Playa Chiquita. Your options include swimming, beach combing, bird watching, snorkeling at Punta Uva (ocean conditions permitting), or biking down the coastal road to the towns of Puerto Viejo, or Manzanillo. Overnight at Shawanda Hotel, or similar. (B)

Day 8: Pick up and transfer to your hotel in San Jose. Real InterContinental, or similar. (B)

Day 9: Pick up and transfer to the Juan Santamaría International Airport for your flight home. (B)
